“A beautifully told story that is charming and often heart-warming. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️” – Theatre Weekly
“Moving and Enticing” – The Play’s the Thing
“The fish that were our living, lads,
Are driven far away;
But mackerel’s in the bay, me lads
There’s mackerel in the bay.”
A Norwegian fishing vessel is struck by a storm in the North Sea in the 1950’s. Its crew, rescued by an English ship heading homewards, soon find themselves in a sleepy coastal town in Northumberland. A whirlwind romance ensues between one of the fishermen and the daughter of his hosts.
60 years later, the romance is discovered by a teenage girl – recently relocated to help look after her dementia-suffering grandmother. As she strikes up contact with the elderly fisherman in his own sleepy coastal village in Norway, an unusual bond is forged between two unlikely friends.
Hjem is a magically modern folk story, exploring the tales we tell, and how we connect with the natural world around us.
